Universal Pictures is bringing the excitement of the upcoming Michael movie to the streets of Wellington, New Zealand, with a special interactive bus shelter experience. Located on Oriental Parade, the themed installation invites fans and passersby to step into the world of the King of Pop while promoting the highly anticipated film. The activation features interactive elements inspired by Michael Jackson’s legendary energy and iconic style, turning an ordinary bus stop into a unique fan experience.
The installation will remain in place until May 17, giving locals and visitors a chance to check it out before heading to cinemas to see the movie.
Universal Pictures shared the promotion with the message: “Startin’ Somethin’ in Wellington! Check out the #MichaelMovie interactive bus shelter on Oriental Parade until May 17, and see the movie in cinemas NOW!”
The VIP preview screening of Michael was held on the afternoon of May 11 at Megabox COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, drawing a huge crowd of celebrities, idols, dancers, and entertainers eager to celebrate the highly anticipated film. Michael tells the story of the life, artistry, and legendary career of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, tracing the rise of the global icon whose music and performances changed pop culture forever.
The red carpet event quickly became one of Seoul’s hottest entertainment gatherings of the week, with an impressive lineup of stars attending the screening. According to Korean media reports, guests included members of RIIZE, Eunseok, Sungchan, Wonbin, Sohee, and Anton, along with choreographers Lia Kim and Monika.
Also spotted at the event were Jooheon of Monsta X, veteran singer Park Nam-jung, dance stars Aiki and Honey J, as well as John Park
Members of Super Junior, Leeteuk, Shindong, and Eunhyuk, attended the screening, while NI-KI from ENHYPEN also appeared at the event, generating strong reactions from fans online.
The guest list further included members of FIFTY FIFTY, Sean, Jung Seung-won, Kani, and rookie group BAYON, making the screening a major crossover event between film and K-pop culture.
With Michael officially opening in Korean theaters on May 13, anticipation continues to build not only for the film itself, but also for the growing wave of special cinema events and collectible merchandise tied to the release.

Obwohl "Michael" erst seit kurzer Zeit läuft, hat sich der Film bereits an die Spitze der erfolgreichsten Musikbiografien katapultiert – und macht deutlich, dass der "King of Pop" noch immer Millionen Menschen weltweit begeistert.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" setzte neue Maßstäbe
Als "Bohemian Rhapsody" 2018 in die Kinos kam, rechnete kaum jemand mit diesem Erfolg. Das Queen-Biopic über Frontmann Freddie Mercury spielte weltweit mehr als 900 Millionen US-Dollar ein – bei Produktionskosten von nur rund 50 Millionen Dollar. Damit wurde der Film zur erfolgreichsten Musikbiografie aller Zeiten. Der King Of Pop ist nun auch der König der Biopics, denn kein biographischer Film spielte zum Start jemals mehr Geld ein. Ob „Michael“ aber auch insgesamt mit „Oppenheimer“ und „Bohemian Rhapsody“ mithalten kann, muss sich erst zeigen.
Dass „Michael“ ein Phänomen in den weltweiten Kinos werden würde, hatte sich schon eine ganze Weile angedeutet – daran konnten auch die Berichte und Kontroversen über die Entstehung des Films und die sehr reingewaschene Darstellung von Michael Jackson nichts ändern. Und doch hat „Michael“ am Startwochenende alle Erwartungen noch einmal übertroffen und ein sensationelles Debüt mit gleich mehreren gebrochenen Rekorden und Bestmarken hingelegt.
Michael“ steht nach dem ersten Wochenende in den weltweiten Kinos bei einem Einspielergebnis von rund 217,4 Millionen Dollar– davon 97 Millionen Dollar in Nordamerika und 120,4 Millionen Dollar im Rest der Welt. Das ist zum einen der zweitbeste Start des Kinojahres 2026, nur übertroffen von „Der Super Mario Galaxy Film“ (372,6 Millionen Dollar).
Bester Start eines (Musik-)Biopics für "Michael"
Zum anderen und noch viel wichtiger: „Michael“ ist der beste Start eines Musik-Biopics gelungen, nachdem man das Queen-Biopoc „Bohemian Rhapsody“ hinter sich gelassen hat, der anno 2018 auf rund 131 Millionen Dollar kam. Und nicht nur das: „Michael“ kann zudem auch den besten Start eines Biopics überhaupt für sich verbuchen;– denn auch Christopher Nolans „Oppenheimer“ konnte man übertreffen, der 2023 als Teil des „Barbenheimer“-Phänomens auf rund 180,5 Millionen Dollar zum Start kam.
Auch in Deutschland war „Michael“ trotz des schönen Frühlingswetters übrigens ein echter Hit und lockte am Startwochenende 425.000 Fans in die Kinos. Laut übereinstimmenden Berichten der US-Branchenmagazine handelt es sich dabei auch hierzulande um den größten Start eines Musik-Biopics – allerdings wohl nur, wenn man auf den erzielten Umsatz schaut. Denn „Bohemian Rhapsody“ kam damals sogar auf 508.000 verkaufte Tickets zum Start.
Knackt "Michael" die Milliarde?
Zumindest zum weltweiten Start hat man also zwei absolut überragende Biopic-Superhits übertroffen. Was das für die langfristigen Erfolgsaussichten von „Michael“ bedeutet, bleibt dennoch vorerst abzuwarten. Denn erst einmal muss sich zeigen, ob auch der Michael-Jackson-Film derartige Dauerbrenner-Qualitäten mit sich bringt. „Bohemian Rhapsody“ spielte damals insgesamt sensationelle 904 Millionen Dollar ein, „Oppenheimer“ sogar 975,8 Millionen Dollar.
Fakt ist zudem: „Michael“ war deutlich teurer als „Bohemian Rhapsody“ (55 Millionen Dollar Budget) und sogar „Oppenheimer“ (100 Millionen Dollar Budget) Stolze 250 Millionen Dollar soll „Michael“ dank umfangreicher Nachdrehs und Überarbeitungen gekostet haben, wovon dann 50 Millionen Dollar alleine von der Familie von Michael Jackson getragen wurden. Auch wenn man sich also aktuell auf einem guten Weg befindet, muss „Michael“ in den nächsten Wochen weiterhin ähnlich stark in den Kinos abliefern.

Man darf dabei auch nicht vergessen, dass "Bohemian Rhapsody" viele Wochen (ca.15) länger gelaufen ist.
"Michael" war zuerst nur bis zum 13. Mai geplant, (3 Wochen) aber er geht jetzt doch schon in die 4. Woche.
Ich habe mal im Kinoprogramm nachgesehen und habe entdeckt, dass er in der 5. Woche auch noch drin steht. Wenn er "Bohemian Rhapsody" noch einholen will, muss er wohl noch mindestens 2 Wochen laufen. 🙂

Fans Can Win Tickets to the “Michael” Japan Premiere on June 4
Japanese fans of Michael Jackson now have a chance to attend the official Japan premiere screening of the upcoming biopic Michael. Japanese radio station J-Wave has launched a special giveaway campaign offering 10 lucky winners, each with a guest, tickets to the “Michael” Japan Premiere screening event.
The exclusive premiere event will take place on June 4 in Tokyo, ahead of the film’s nationwide Japanese release on June 12. The exact venue will only be revealed to winners after the drawing.
According to the campaign page, applicants must be J-WAVE “J-me” members and use 100 membership points to enter the lottery. Entries are open until May 24, with winners notified by email after the selection process.
“Michael” continues to build strong anticipation in Japan, where promotional campaigns and exclusive merchandise have already generated major excitement among fans.

The massive statue of Jaafar Jackson featured on the spectacular Hollywood 3D billboard promoting Michael has now been dismantled from its original installation at the busy intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Poinsettia Place. As reported in our previous coverage on MJVibe, the larger-than-life display quickly became one of the most talked-about promotional activations for the film, drawing fans and tourists daily to capture photos and videos of the stunning 3D effect.
While the billboard installation has now officially come down following the movie’s promotional rollout, the statue itself has not disappeared. The impressive piece has reportedly been relocated to the lobby of Lionsgate headquarters, allowing visitors and employees to continue enjoying the striking tribute to Michael Jackson’s cinematic return.

Das mußte ich einfach posten, da haben wir mal den direkten Vergleich zwischen Michael live und Jaafar im Film, ich finde Jaafar phänomenal, muß ich wirklich sagen, aber die schreienden und in Ohnmacht fallenden Fans finde ich auch nicht schlecht als Schauspieler, grins, aber wer weiß, vielleicht ging es ihnen ja wirklich so.

Michael 2 Already in the Works? Lionsgate Teases More Michael Jackson Story
The story is far from over. After the massive worldwide success of Michael, Lionsgate has officially confirmed that work on a second Michael Jackson movie is already moving forward. During the studio’s latest quarterly earnings call, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson revealed that discussions about a sequel are progressing “exceptionally well.”
The first film closes during the Bad era in 1987, leaving an enormous part of Michael Jackson’s life and career still unexplored. According to Fogelson, that was always part of the plan.
“There is a ton of incredibly entertaining Michael Jackson story, and much of the biggest and most popular parts of his music catalog were not touched upon in the first film,” he explained.
That means a potential second movie could dive into the Dangerous and HIStory eras, major world tours, groundbreaking performances, and some of the biggest moments of Michael Jackson’s global superstardom. Fogelson also hinted that the storytelling may not follow a strict timeline.
“We can go forwards and backwards in telling this story,” he teased].
The possibility of a second chapter has actually been circulating for months. Back in March, Lionsgate CFO Jim Barge had already hinted that the studio was considering splitting the story into two films.
Interestingly, Lionsgate also revealed that around 25 to 30 percent of a second movie may already have been shot during production of the first film. If true, this could significantly speed up development while reducing production costs.
The announcement comes after Michael became. Produced with a budget exceeding $155 million, the biopic has already grossed more than $700 million worldwide.
Still, questions remain about how a sequel would handle the controversies surrounding Michael Jackson’s later years. The original film reportedly underwent major rewrites after legal complications linked to agreements involving Jordan Chandler prevented any depiction or mention connected to that case. Despite those complications, Lionsgate appears fully committed to continuing the cinematic story of the King of Pop.
And with the first movie ending on the words “His Story Continues,” fans may not have to wait too long before the next chapter begins.
